Madrid's metro began operation in 1919 (Cuatro Caminos - Sol). The first lines (1-5, 10) were built in small profile, similar to the Paris Metro, using standard gauge but narrow tunnels, short platforms (60-90 m) and low station halls. Stations of these first lines are located not deeper than 20 m below street level (except La Latina - Line 5 - 28 m). The average station distance is 630 m on these lines. In the 1970's and 1980's new lines (L-6, L-7, L-8, L-9) were built following new standards: big profile tunnels in order to use larger rolling stock, and deep stations (for example: Cuatro Caminos - Line 6: 48 m, Avenida de América - Line 7: 36 m - Line 9: 44 m, Sainz de Baranda - Line 9: 43 m). Platforms can be reached via a series of escalators. On large profile lines the average station distance is 850 m (except L-8 and L-9 south).
The extension of the airport line L-8 from Mar de Cristal to a more central terminus at Nuevos Ministerios (L-6, L-10 and Cercanías), with an intermediate transfer station at Colombia (Line 9), opened on 21 May 2002. The biggest project carried out between 1999 and 2003 was MetroSur or Line 12, a 41 km underground circular line with 28 stations connecting the major suburban towns south of Madrid like Alcorcón, Móstoles, Fuenlabrada, Getafe and Leganés. This line is connected to L-10 from Casa de Campo and serves as a feeder for three RENFE Cercanías lines into Madrid (C3, C4, C5). The entire circle line together with the remaining stretch of L-10 started operation on 11 April 2003. More info Apart from the extensive metro network Madrid also has a dense network of suburban trains (Cercanías). Some routes (especially C-5 from Móstoles to Fuenlabrada via Atocha operate a metro-like service. An extension from Cantoblanco Universidad to Alcobendas-San Sebastián de los Reyes opened 10 Feb 2001 - 7 km (of which 4 km are underground) with 2 intermediate stations, Universidad P. Comillas, Valdelasfuentes (2 underground) served by C-1. A 14.5 km branch off C-3 was put into service to San Martín de la Vega (Time Warner theme park) in early 2002. On 24 July 2002, route C-7 was extended north from Tres Cantos to Colmenar Viejo. An extension is under construction for C-5 from Fuenlabrada to Humanes. |

Many extensions have been proposed for the 4-year period starting in 2003. The regional elections held in May will show which of these will actually become a reality. We can be sure, that the outstanding growth of the Madrid Metro network hasn't come to a halt yet. See different proposals here |
